“Fisher has selected as his focus the life of a remarkable man, Four Arrows, a beacon of hope in an era of confusion and fear. Fisher carefully and expertly explains some of Four Arrows’s most important contributions to understanding the path toward Fearlessness.  Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows The True Story of an Indigenous-Based Social Transformer

In these times of cascading global crises it is past time for us to re-evaluate the dominant worldview that has brought us to the point of likely extinction. As a species we need to re- embrace the worldview that guided us for 99% of our history on this planet and re-learn our “original instructions” from wisdom of our ancient ancestors and from the surviving Indigenous Cultures who still know how to live in harmony with the Natural Order. Acting on this holistic understanding may bring us beyond our individualistic egos and collective illusions that are cast forth like chains via the hegemony that manipulates our fears so as to allow the rulng elite to gain control of all.

Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows offers strong ‘medicine’ for the reconstruction of a healthy, sane, and sustainable future for all of life on this precious planet. Utilizing an “intellectual biography” of Four Arrows (aka Dr. Donald Trent Jacobs) and presenting a picture of his courageous life through true stories, Dr. Fisher creates a powerful adventure into the firey philosophy, activism, and emancipatory inspirations of one of the world’s great visionary educators and social transformers.

Through a number of Four Arrows’s unique experiences including firefighting, white-water kayaking, wild horse training, world-class athletic competitions, and counter-cultural activism, Four Arrows has become a connoisseur of fear and courage. This book shows how he walks a universal ethical path of Fearlessness at a time when too many remain trapped by their fears. This is a text for all people but especially useful for teachers across all grades and disciplines. Study questions encourage dialogue to help students overcome fears in service of helping to transform the world with their own "fearless engagement."

This book offers 15 teaching stories provided by Four Arrows about his life adventures, activism, and professional work as a holistic-Indigenous educator. The book is contextualized within the challenges of our times and the need for learners to examine best how they may re-evaluate and transform the Dominant [Westerm] worldview that has proven unsustainable to life on this planet. Fisher and Four Arrows dialogue at the end of each part of the book with fresh insights and honesty, including self-critique. This book will serve well for students in high schools, colleges and universities in the many disciplines where understanding about courage, fear and fearlessness can be integrated into the curriculum.

  • Our First post-published book review:

Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows, written by R Michael Fisher about Don Four Arrows Jacobs, exemplifies a role model by authentic lived example. It came out less than three weeks ago on June 30, 2018. Only a few copies of the first edition are still available on Amazon and already the prices have started to soar. This biography will be well worth the read to anyone, but especially to those of us who have been challenged in facing our fears.

I highly recommend that school boards, both public and private, purchase a copy of this book to be available to secondary school teachers. I will also put this title forth as an invaluable purchase for our Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation teacher lending library. R Michael Fisher, who completed his PhD in Canada at The University of British Columbia in May 2003 [Faculty of Education] wrote a dissertation: "Fearless leadership - In and Out of the Fear Matrix," he also published a sixteen page technical paper paper in 2011 which he presented at a conference in Carbondale, Illinois entitled: "A ‘Fear’ Studies Perspective and Critique: Analyzing English and Stengel’s Progressive Study of Fear and Learning in Education Theory." I ask you this: We all are born, live and die, but how many of us can say we have embraced living 'fearlessly' with heart?

While waiting for your copy of Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows to arrive, it is worth visiting R Michael Fisher's home page to have a better idea of what fearlessness is all about: https://fearlessnessmovement.ning.com. I have witnessed presentations by Four Arrows in different university-sponsored conference settings. He is a dynamic speaker who touches hearts and minds in ways that can lead to exponential growth during this life journey. I look forward one day to attending a presentation by R Michael Fisher as well. Sitting Bull, whom I quoted in my own 2001 MA thesis on First Nations character education said: "Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children." I believe, that us to put thought into meaningful productive action requires fearlessness like that demonstrated by Don Four Arrows Jacobs.
