Michael Fisher of USA and Desh Subba of Hong Kong.

In that welcome ceremony itself, Sri Desh Subba presented me a book, ‘Philosophy of Fearism: A First East-West Dialogue, written by R. Michael Fisher and Desh Subba. This book is about a new philosophy that takes a critical focus on the importance of the nature and role of fear in human existence. It is an essential text for leaders, students, parents, professionals and diverse section of people of this globe. In that welcome ceremony, Sri Joyram Phangcho, a well-known Karbi Bhajan singer, presented a beautiful Karbi Bhajan in honour of Desh Subba’s august visit to Diphu who has mesmerized the audiences through his enthralling melodious voice of singing and the song was composed by Dhaneswar Engti.

According to Desh Subba, the architect of Philosophy of Fearism, - ‘Life is conducted, directed and controlled by the Fear. He has already received four book awards in 2015. The literary awards he has received are;- International Nepali Literature Society’s (Washington, DC) Dr. Shyam Karki/Indira Karki Diaspora Best Analytical Book of the year award 2014-15 for ‘Bhoyabad’  (Philosophy of Fearism), National Indie Excellence Awards, International Book Award (finalist) and New York Book Festival Award (Honorable mention) and 2015 Southern California Book Festival Awards (Honorable mention). He keeps on writing on the philosophy of Fearism along with literary discourse on fearism at Universities, like Hong Kong University, Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam, Azmol Foundation, Hojai, Assam, and elsewhere around the world continuously. He is the creator of the Philosophy of Fearism, and, at present, he is a leading Fearism Spokesperson in the East, and a very dedicated co-founder of the ‘Fearism Study Centre of Dharan, Nepal, which was established in 2009.

Afterward, what is Fear? How Fear exists? Can Fear be a beautiful consciousness, and is it a director of life? Can fear be a driving force of civilization, and is it true that fear is a universe? Does fear is a black hole, and can fear be an invention? Are we ready to accept, that fear can be a light? Can we accept that, fear is a seer? Can fear become a mystery? How can we accept that God is fear? Can we believe of the fact that fear is a superpower? Is it acceptable to human beings that fear is an alert indicator? Can we unhesitatingly admit that, - fear is courage? Can fear be an enemy of a person? Can fear become a beauty ever? Do we accept, that, fear is a powerful weapon? Is it true that fear is a controlling mechanism? Can fear be super law? Can we accept fear is a guardian of all activities? Is it possible to acknowledge that fear is a group of all psychological effects? And is it logically acceptable that fear protects birds and animal?

Thus we can go on asking so many questions ourselves to know what fear is exactly. The answers to those questions can be given properly only by person who is a psychologist or a philosopher or a psychiatrist or a doctor in the present time.

The meaning of fear according dictionary is – an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. It can be afraid of someone or something as likely to be dangerous, painful, or harmful. Another literal meaning of the word fear – is scared and terror which means disambiguation. A scared child shows fear in an uncertain environment. Fear is an emotion induces by a threat perceived by living entities, which causes a change in brain and organ function and ultimately a change in behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events. Fear may occur in response to a specific stimulus happening in the present, or to a future situation, which is perceived as risk to health or life, status, power, security, or in the case of humans, wealth or anything help valuable.

Desh Subba is a philosopher, novelist and poet. He has started Fearism philosophy and line poems for the first time in life. He is the author of the book ‘Philosophy of Fearism’. It portrays Fear as major part of life which has to be understood logically by every individual of our society. According to him, - ‘fear is a beautiful consciousness; it acts as a director of life. It is a driving force of our civilization. Fear can be considered as a universe, it is like a black hole of space. He also goes on saying that, - fear is an invention, it is like a light of our life. Fear can also be considered as a seer and at the same time it is like a mystery of life. After all God is fear; it is a super power and it is an alert indicator. Fear can be accepted as courage and it is an enemy of a person and its personality. It is also a super power which exists along with fear. Hence fear is an alert indicator and courage of a man. At the same time, fear is an enemy of a person. But, fear occupies our mind and it is the beauty of our life. So, fear is powerful weapon of our life. Because, fear is a controlling mechanism, hence, fear is a super law; it is a guardian of all activities of our life. Desh Subba has further opines that – ‘fear is a group of all psychological effects and it protects birds and animals too.’

He strongly believes that, - Fear is a beautiful realization.’ It is, moreover, a beautiful perception with different forms. Therefore, every one of our society needs to regard Fear and should accept it as a beautiful awareness. It can facilitate a man to success in life. Fear is a beautiful realization, because, our prosperity and progress of life lies behind it. He strongly believes that,- ‘the world could be different, it wasn’t beautiful. Even the world is beautiful due to its beauty.’ Thus, it can be said that, - Fear is beauty and beauty is Fear for all of us.

He further opines that, - ‘life is conducted, directed and controlled by the Fear.’ Prof. Dr. Tanta Prasad Neupane, Chairman, Fearism Study Centre, Dharan, Nepal, has said that - ‘Fearism is a gift to the world from Nepal,’and, according to Yese Dorje Thongsi, - ‘Fearism of Desh Subba has shaken the foundation of Nepali literature and intellectual world’.

In life, I hope there is never a time when fear leaves our side; it is an awful unseen shade of our life. All we got to do is keep faith in fear, and the bad times will slide along, we should not lose hope in fear and more over in ourselves. For fear has blessed everyone with a magical fairy all the time. This little friend of fear will protect us in times of distress. I hope, fear will lead us where we ought to go, because, fear knows the best, and when we find ourselves completely misplaced and without a clue to judge, - I hope, fear will open up a new door for us!

  • Dear Michael !

I am trying to bring up all books in English but not possible. How many can trying. Thank you.

  • Desh,

I've been wondering when I could find a list of all these 19 books. It would be good to create a proper scholarly format for these as "References" and state their full language they are written in, and if translators are involved their names. For the future, perhaps you would do this in proper format. Other than my request, I most appreciate you documenting these here. Thanks. -M.

  • Is life directed and controlled by fear?

-GyanBahadur Chhetri, Assam, India, Sahitya Academy Member,( Article published in popular News paper of Assam, India)

(17 Jul) Guwahati, July 17 -- It is seen that human life is greatly influenced by fear. Fear controls, directs, conducts, makes aware and balances human activity. It is because of fear that man is controlled, aware, disciplined, obedient and honest. We work, make plans, and make rules and regulations only due to this fear. After reading the book of Desh Subba I am trying to explain our actions in a different angle. A student reads day and night due to fear of getting less mark in the examination. The historic Assam Movement for deportation of foreign nationals was due to the fear of the local people becoming minority in own land. In this way, our actions, personal or social, may be explained from the angle of fear. The primary objective of this article is only to invite opinion of our authors, academicians and readers. Desh Subba, an author from Nepal has propounded the theory of 'fearism'. He, in his book Philosophy of Fearism claims that life is conducted, directed and controlled by fear. The theory is rapidly becoming interesting among elite readers and authors. It is seen that some authors have chosen 'fearism' as a theme in their creative writings. In academic institutions too, 'fearism' has been incorporated as a subject of study. Fear is an emotion induced by a threat perceived by living entities, which causes a change in the brain and organ function, and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events. Subba has defined fear as a beautiful consciousness. The world we live in is beautiful only for the beauty of fear. Fear is impossible without knowledge. An innocent child can catch a poisonous snake or put his hand in burning fire. This is due to absence of knowledge. Real knowledge of an object invites to different conditions: whether the object is harmful or harmless. If the object is harmful it may create fear. If doubts and allusions are added to the object it may create fear. We have an allusion in the mind and may doubt seeing a rope as a snake from a distance. Subba has shown the origin of fear in the following order: Life-Consciousness-Knowledge-Fear-Cognition. Dr R Michael Fisher, founder of 'In Search of Fearlessness Research Institute' (USA), has critically opined: 'He (Desh Subba) has less depth of analysis in sociopolitical, cultural aspects that I would prefer added to his conception. Again, a philosophy of fearism is what it is, and can be a basis for a theory of fearism. Unfortunately, Subba seems not to have read, or at least he does not cite the essential literature on fearism, from my perspective leaving his work less rigorous in scholarship than is ideal. (Towards a Theory of Fearism, Technical Paper No. 51). Fear directs our life and entire human civilization. Man has multiple options. He chooses security, longevity, prosperity, fame, etc., simultaneously. He also desires to excel in all spheres of his life. He works hard to achieve success. In other

words, he does all these only because of the fear of failure. Some people are of the opinion that God and invisible powers direct, protect and care for our lives and the world. Any power may be there in front of the curtain, but none can deny the role of fear behind it. The more we reject it, the more it becomes fearful. We perform all our activities for protection and emancipation from fear. Fear is the most dominant undercurrent in our consciousness. Most of our thoughts and actions are induced by it. We are prisoners of our fears. We are bound to them and limited by them. What we do and what we achieve in our lives are defined by our fears and our ability to cope with them. Our dreams, aspirations, achievements and talents are shaped and hewn in the furnace of our fears. We can get rid of fear, if not we can bring it down to the minimum level by proper treatment of fear. Subba has shown two ways of treatment of fear. Primary fear lessens itself in due course of time. If the source or the cause of the fear is known, one can avoid it or lessen it. Long-term fears like the fear of death or the fear of God or law, however, persist forever. In secondary treatment of fear, the author has adopted the following methods. Changing form: If a person can change his thought on a certain subject and take the inevitable like death easily, fear of death cannot make him panicky. Escaping and ignoring: Fear arising out of religious, social or cultural practices may set aside by escaping and ignoring method. In a secular country like India citizens enjoy fundamental rights and ones a person is confident the fear steadily goes down. Incessant fear: This type of fear may be allowed to persist because it plays a vital positive role in a person's life. A kind of fear works in the mind of a student that makes him work hard leading to his goal. However, there must be a balance; otherwise too much fear for examination may ruin the academic career of a student. According to Subba, the world is primarily dominated by two philosophical thoughts ' eastern spiritualism and western materialism. Both the schools of thought have miserably failed to bring peace and harmony in the society. Hence, he chose a third path which, as he claims is a path in between spiritualism and materialism. In the absence of 'fearist' perspective, the foundation of all philosophies, irrespective of their place of origin are bound to collapse. Their foundation is 'fearism'. Literature and philosophy, both are impossible unless fear perspective emerges in consciousness. It is an easy and comfortable perspective to simplify life. People fear people who interpret life and the world in their way. It has created threat to the world. Hence, it demands a new approach and interpretation to rescue the world from such fear. Decons-truction and reconstruction of the concept of fear have become necessary in the present context. Sources of fear have to be identified and reinterpreted. If we can do this it will minimize fear to some extent and that can be a great achievement. For any query with respect to this article or any other content requirement, please contact Editor at htsyndication@hindustantimes.comAssam Tribune
